Medical Network Resource Guide – Section 2

     Health system provider network

Because we are proud of and confident in the care we provide, and because we are thankful to have you on our team, using a health system provider is the most affordable option.

When you choose a provider or facility in the health system network, your annual deductible, coinsurance and copays are lower compared to in-network providers and especially to those who are out-of-network. Your annual out-of-pocket maximum is also much lower.

The health system network includes health system facilities for covered services within The University of Kansas Health System in the Kansas City metro area, including Olathe Health, Great Bend and the St. Francis campus in Topeka (Liberty Hospital facilities will be added Jan. 1, 2025).

Remember that networks are made up of both facilities and providers. As we expand, the health system network is growing to provide more access to care, while also becoming more complex.

For that reason, we can no longer assume that providers, including physicians, located in health system facilities are in the health system tier of the medical plan’s provider network.

Consider this example:

  1. Many of the OB-GYNs who see patients and deliver babies at Olathe Medical Center are not in the health system network because they are not employed by UKP or the health system.
    1. In this case, the facility (Olathe Medical Center) is in the health system network but the provider is not (they may be in-network or out-of-network).
    2. Good news: Some OB-GYNs employed by UKP are seeing patients and delivering babies at Olathe Medical Center and the number will continue to grow over time. Until then, do your homework to understand your cost for office visits and deliveries.

Bottom line: Do your homework to understand which providers AND facilities are in which provider network before you receive care (when possible). Once the service is complete, you are accountable for paying the associated fees – the health system, Benefits team or Blue Cross Blue Shield cannot change the charges.

Olathe Health and Liberty Hospital providers

Olathe Health providers

All Olathe Health facilities are included in the health system network tier.

Some of the providers who work at Olathe Health facilities are employed by UKP or the health system, making them part of the health system network. However, some providers at Olathe Health facilities are not employed by UKP or the health system. Therefore, those providers will be either in-network or out-of-network.

When receiving care at an Olathe Health facility, use this list of providers to be sure who is in the health system network. This list will be updated periodically, so check it before your visit, every time you receive care at an Olathe Health facility.

Liberty Hospital providers

All Liberty Hospital facilities will be included in the health system network tier starting Jan. 1, 2025.

Some of the providers who work at Liberty Hospital facilities will be in the health system network. However, some providers may be either in-network or out-of-network.

The list of providers at Liberty Hospital who will be in the health system network will be posted here by Jan. 1, 2025.
